Ingredients
Scale
Sausage and Egg Mixture
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 8 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Biscuit Layer
- 1 (16-ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough, cut into quarters
Gravy
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Mix Eggs and Seasonings: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, 1/2 cup whole milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until well combined.
- Combine Sausage and Cheese: Stir the cooked sausage and shredded cheddar cheese into the egg mixture thoroughly.
- Prepare Biscuit Base: Spread the biscuit dough pieces evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Add Egg and Sausage Mixture: Pour the egg and sausage mixture evenly over the biscuits, ensuring the pieces are well covered and distributed.
- Make Gravy: Using the same skillet used for the sausage, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually add the 2 1/2 cups whole milk, whisking constantly until the gravy thickens. Stir in crushed red pepper flakes if desired for a mild kick.
- Top Casserole with Gravy: Pour the thickened gravy evenly over the entire casserole to coat well.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the eggs are fully set and the biscuits are golden brown around the edges.
- Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving to allow flavors to meld and cooling slightly.
