Description

A hearty and comforting Biscuits and Gravy Casserole perfect for a delicious breakfast or brunch. This recipe combines savory sausage, fluffy biscuits, a cheesy egg mixture, and creamy homemade gravy baked together to golden perfection. Easy to prepare and great for make-ahead meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage and Egg Mixture

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Biscuit Layer

  • 1 (16-ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough, cut into quarters

Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Mix Eggs and Seasonings: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, 1/2 cup whole milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until well combined.
  4. Combine Sausage and Cheese: Stir the cooked sausage and shredded cheddar cheese into the egg mixture thoroughly.
  5. Prepare Biscuit Base: Spread the biscuit dough pieces evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  6. Add Egg and Sausage Mixture: Pour the egg and sausage mixture evenly over the biscuits, ensuring the pieces are well covered and distributed.
  7. Make Gravy: Using the same skillet used for the sausage, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually add the 2 1/2 cups whole milk, whisking constantly until the gravy thickens. Stir in crushed red pepper flakes if desired for a mild kick.
  8. Top Casserole with Gravy: Pour the thickened gravy evenly over the entire casserole to coat well.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the eggs are fully set and the biscuits are golden brown around the edges.
  10. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving to allow flavors to meld and cooling slightly.

Notes

  • This casserole can be prepared the night before and refrigerated overnight. Bake fresh in the morning for a convenient breakfast.
  • For added flavor variety, substitute cheddar with pepper jack cheese or a cheese blend.
  • Try using turkey sausage or plant-based sausage to make this recipe lighter or vegetarian-friendly.
