Description

Indulge in the nostalgia of diner-style comfort food with this Classic Patty Melt Burger. Juicy beef patty, gooey Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions sandwiched between slices of toasted rye bread, all slathered with a secret sauce that adds a tangy kick.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Secret Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

For the Burger:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 1 large yellow onion (thinly sliced)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until smooth and set aside.
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and cook sliced onions until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Season with salt and set aside.
  3. Shape and Cook Patties: Divide beef into patties, season, and cook in a skillet until done, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  4. Assemble the Burger: Spread secret sauce on rye bread slices. Layer with cheese, patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and top with bread.
  5. Grill the Burger: Melt butter in a skillet, grill the sandwich until golden and crispy, and cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Serve: Enjoy hot.

Notes

  • You can use American or cheddar cheese as a substitute.
  • For extra crunch, grill the sandwich with a cast iron pan and press slightly.
  • The secret sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
