Ingredients
Scale
Rice
- 1 cup sushi rice (rinsed under cold water until clear)
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (added to warm sushi rice)
Protein and Vegetables
- 8 ounces imitation crab meat (shredded into bite-sized pieces)
- 1 medium cucumber (peeled and sliced into thin strips)
- 1 medium avocado (cut into wedges or cubes)
- 1 medium carrot (grated or julienned)
- 2-3 green onions (finely chopped)
Garnishes and Condiments
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (for sprinkling on top)
- Soy sauce (to taste, for serving on the side)
Instructions
- Prepare the Rice: Rinse 1 cup of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Cook the rice in a rice cooker or on the stovetop with 1 cup of water according to package instructions until tender and fluffy.
- Prepare Vegetables: While the rice cooks, peel and slice the cucumber into thin strips and grate or julienne the carrot. Set these aside for assembly.
- Season the Rice: Once the rice has finished cooking, transfer it to a bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar and gently fold the rice to combine. Allow the rice to cool slightly to room temperature while you prepare other ingredients.
- Prepare Crab Meat: Shred the imitation crab meat into bite-sized pieces to ensure even distribution throughout the bowl.
- Prepare Avocado: Cut the avocado in half, carefully remove the pit, then slice or cube the flesh as preferred for easy layering in the bowl.
- Assemble the Bowls: Start by placing a scoop of the seasoned sushi rice at the bottom of each bowl. Layer shredded crab meat, cucumber strips, grated carrot, and avocado slices evenly on top.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle finely chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds over each bowl. Serve with soy sauce on the side for dipping or drizzling according to taste.
Notes
- Rinsing the sushi rice thoroughly is crucial for the perfect texture by removing excess starch.
- Allow the rice to cool slightly before assembling to prevent the avocado from browning.
- Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor and texture contrasts.
- You can substitute imitation crab meat with real crab or cooked shrimp for a seafood variation.
- Adjust the amount of soy sauce according to your dietary needs, or use low-sodium soy sauce for a healthier option.
